Odisha Govt to Buy Back SC/ST Land to Prevent Exploitation
Government to Hold Land for 3 Years, Allow Original Owner to Reclaim

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has proposed a new plan to protect Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) landowners from being exploited by wealthy buyers. Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari announced that SC/ST individuals will be allowed to sell their land directly to the government, which will hold the land for 2 to 3 years.
During this period, the land will not be resold, and the original owner will have the option to buy it back. If the owner chooses not to reclaim the land, it will be auctioned to buyers from the same community.
A committee led by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Revenue Department will oversee the plan. The initiative aims to prevent forced land sales and ensure fair use of land by providing a safety net for vulnerable communities, especially for urgent needs like education, health care, or family events.
