#BoycottTurkey Trends Across India After Erdogan Backs Pakistan

Bhubaneswar, May 16:

Public anger in India is growing rapidly after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan openly backed Pakistan during the recent India-Pakistan conflict sparked by a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam. His statement, calling Pakistan a "brotherly nation" and vowing support "in good times and bad," has led to a nationwide call to boycott Turkey.

Following India's launch of Operation Sindoor—which targeted terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK), killing over 100 terrorists—Pakistan retaliated with shelling and drone strikes. India responded by targeting Pakistan's radar and airbase assets. A ceasefire was reached on May 10, but tensions remain high.

Erdogan’s support for Pakistan has provoked strong reactions across India, with citizens taking to social media to push the #BoycottTurkey campaign. Many are urging a complete halt to tourism, trade, and diplomatic engagement with Ankara.

The backlash is not limited to the public. Prominent Indian universities have begun severing ties with Turkish institutions. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia have suspended all Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Turkey and its government-affiliated organizations. More academic and cultural institutions are expected to follow suit.

The situation underscores how global political statements can quickly influence domestic public opinion and international relations.
