Vedanta’s Odisha Smelter to be Among World’s Largest
3 MTPA plant and 4,900 MW power unit to drive industrial jobs, MSME growth, and green manufacturing
Bhubaneswar : Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has announced a massive ₹1.3 trillion greenfield investment in Odisha, emerging as the country’s biggest manufacturing commitment in Q1-FY26.
The project will see the establishment of a 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) aluminium smelter and a 4,900 MW captive power plant near Kamakhyanagar in Dhenkanal district. Once completed, the facility is expected to rank among the world’s largest aluminium smelters.
According to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), private sector investments totalled ₹3.5 trillion in Q1-FY26, with manufacturing leading the charge. Vedanta’s commitment alone accounted for the largest share, signalling renewed private sector confidence in India’s industrial growth story.
The Dhenkanal project is set to generate over 2 lakh jobs, both directly and indirectly, while fostering MSMEs and auxiliary industries in logistics, construction, power, and automotive. Experts say the investment will act as a major economic catalyst for Odisha, positioning the state as a hub for global manufacturing.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said the project will reinforce India’s position as a global aluminium powerhouse. “This smelter will not only boost regional development but also contribute meaningfully to India’s journey towards becoming a green metals hub,” he added.
The facility will also integrate advanced technologies to reduce emissions, aligning with Vedanta’s goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon status by 2050 or earlier.
Industry analysts highlight that manufacturing-led investments are fast becoming the backbone of India’s economic resilience, generating large-scale employment and boosting export potential. Vedanta’s Odisha project is seen as a landmark step in India’s industrial resurgence.
