Government Introduces Digital Hallmarking for Silver
New system effective from September to ensure purity and transparency

Bhubaneswar : The government announced the rollout of voluntary hallmarking for silver jewellery and articles starting September 1. The move aims to protect consumer rights and bring greater transparency to the silver market.
Digital HUID for Every Silver Item
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has revised hallmarking rules under IS 2112:2025, replacing the 2014 version. Like gold, silver jewellery will now carry a Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) code, allowing buyers to digitally verify details such as article type, purity, hallmarking date, testing centre, and jeweller’s registration via the BIS Care mobile app.
Expanded Purity Grades and Simplified Mark
The revised rules introduce seven purity grades—800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990, and 999—with 958 and 999 added for the first time. Each hallmark will now include three elements: the BIS Standard Mark with the word “SILVER,” the purity grade, and the HUID code.
Wider Reach and Consumer Awareness
Currently, 230 BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centres operate across 87 districts. In 2024-25, over 32 lakh silver articles were hallmarked under the older system. BIS has also launched awareness campaigns to ensure consumers and jewellers adapt smoothly to the new system.
