Diarrhoea Outbreak Triggers Statewide Raids on Hotels and Eateries
Contaminated Water, Stale Food to Blame; BMC Collects Fines, Tightens Inspections

Bhubaneswar : Odisha is witnessing a sharp rise in diarrhoea cases, with the infection spreading rapidly across districts like Kendrapara, Jajpur, and Bhubaneswar. The Health Department blames contaminated water and stale food for the surge in cases.
In response, municipal bodies—especially the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC)—have intensified raids on hotels, fast-food outlets, and roadside eateries. Food safety officials are conducting surprise checks to ensure hygiene and food quality.
Stale food and use of harmful chemicals were found in several establishments near hospitals. In some places, unhygienic cooking conditions led to penalties, with BMC collecting over ₹10,000 in fines on June 16 alone.
Authorities warn that strict action will be taken against violators, and regular inspections will continue to prevent further outbreaks.
