Trump’s Tariff Hits Odisha’s Seafood and Textile Sectors

Bhubaneswar: The 50% tariff imposed by former US President Donald Trump on Indian exports has severely impacted Odisha’s seafood and textile sectors, two of the state’s key contributors to exports and jobs.

Seafood exports, which grew from ₹300–400 crore two decades ago to ₹4,700 crore in 2024–25, now face major setbacks. The US is the largest market for Odisha’s shrimp, and exporters fear huge losses. With more than half of seafood workers being women, the tariff also threatens livelihoods and empowerment gains. Authorities are considering relief measures, including interest subsidies on working capital, to help businesses stay afloat.

The textile industry faces a similar crisis. At the Odisha Text 2025 Summit, companies pledged over ₹7,800 crore in investments, expected to generate more than 53,000 jobs. However, the steep tariff raises doubts about these projects.

Officials warn that the tariff shock may derail Odisha’s growth strategy. While the government urges exporters to explore markets in Europe, Russia, and China, industry leaders stress that none can replace the scale of the US market. Relief measures will be crucial to protect livelihoods and maintain investor confidence.
