Odisha Launches ‘Mahapurush Adarsh Gram Yojana’ to Honour Legends Through Rural Development

Bhubaneswar: In a move to blend rural development with cultural recognition, the Odisha government is set to launch a new initiative—Mahapurush Adarsh Gram Yojana—which aims to transform the ancestral villages of eminent personalities such as freedom fighters, poets, authors, and artists into model villages.

Announcing the scheme, Rabi Narayan Naik, Minister of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water, said that around 100 to 150 villages will be selected in the first phase. “These villages are the birthplaces of Odisha’s great sons and daughters, yet they often lack basic infrastructure. This scheme will honour their legacy while improving quality of life for the residents,” Naik stated.

The scheme will focus on holistic development, including the construction of roads, schools, health centres, water supply systems, and infrastructure for livelihood generation. Development will be carried out through convergence with multiple departments to ensure a unified approach.

A high-level committee headed by the Chief Secretary will soon be formed to guide and monitor the scheme. At the grassroots level, district Collectors will oversee execution, while BDOs will coordinate at the block level.

This initiative is expected to not only uplift underdeveloped rural areas but also instill a sense of pride and identity, reflecting the ‘Asmita’ (pride) of the Odia people.
