Vedanta Boosts Rural Women’s Livelihoods in Odisha
Empowering Self-Help Groups for Economic Self-Reliance

Bhubaneswar: Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, is uplifting rural women in Odisha by supporting self-help groups (SHGs) in Gunupur village, Kalahandi district. The initiative aims to build entrepreneurial capacity and create sustainable income sources for women through micro-enterprises like slipper-making, paper plate manufacturing, and rice milling.
To strengthen this mission, Vedanta organized a skill-building workshop for 45 women from three SHGs, focusing on income generation, marketing, and sales strategies. Participants received hands-on training and guidance from experts to manage businesses and access financial support effectively.
Sunil Gupta, COO of Vedanta Aluminium, emphasized, “We are dedicated to making women self-reliant and nurturing their potential. Our efforts reflect a long-term commitment to gender inclusion and community upliftment.”
Kalendiri Dhangda Majhi, Secretary of Malankeshwari SHG, acknowledged Vedanta’s role in empowering women: “Their support has given us both the tools and the confidence to grow sustainable businesses.”
Through projects like Panchhi and Shree Shakti, Vedanta continues to empower rural women across Odisha by providing education, employment opportunities, and inclusive policies. These efforts have positively impacted over 1.5 lakh people in Kalahandi and 5 lakh across the state, promoting holistic development and community transformation.
