Sabitri Amabasya Holiday Rescheduled to May 26 in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government has revised the date for the Sabitri Amabasya holiday, declaring May 26 (Monday) as the official public holiday instead of May 27 (Tuesday).

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi approved the proposal for the date revision after consultations with the priests of Puri's Mukti Mandap, other religious bodies, and institutions involved in preparing the Hindu almanac. Initially, as per the official holiday list, Sabitri Amabasya was scheduled to be observed on May 27.

Sabitri Amabasya is a significant festival for married Hindu women in Odisha. On this day, they fast and pray for the long life, prosperity, and well-being of their husbands. It is observed on the Amavasya (new moon day) of the Jyeshtha month, which usually falls in May or June.

The government’s decision to adjust the holiday date aligns with the lunar calendar and religious traditions, ensuring accurate observance of the festival across the state.
