Potential Low Pressure System: SRSC Alerts District Collectors, Issues Orange and Yellow Warnings

Bhubaneswar : The State Regional Science Centre (SRSC) has issued alerts to district collectors in Odisha regarding the likelihood of a developing low pressure system that may cause localized heavy rainfall. Districts under orange and yellow alerts have been advised to remain vigilant and prepared to handle any emergent situations.

Officials have urged residents to monitor water bodies closely and take shelter in safe locations during thunderstorms and lightning. Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea during this period. Collectors have been instructed to report any damages caused by rainfall, lightning, thunderstorms, or landslides immediately to the authorities.

Today, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the western central and adjoining northern Bay of Bengal. It is likely to intensify in the coming days, increasing the chances of heavy rainfall in the state. The Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre has forecast rain and thunderstorms starting from today until June 1. Additionally, an active trough line remains over the region.

Fifteen districts have been issued yellow warnings for heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms. Wind speeds of 40 to 50 km/h are possible in some areas during this period. Although the pre-monsoon showers continue across Odisha, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has clarified there is no prediction of any cyclonic storm formation. Social media rumors about storm development have been dismissed as unfounded by meteorological officials.
