Bhubaneswar Metro to Go Underground, Inspired by Kolkata Model
The state revises the plan to tackle rising congestion with the underground metro rail system

Bhubaneswar: In a major move, the Odisha government has decided to develop an underground metro rail system in Bhubaneswar, replacing the earlier plan for an elevated track. This decision aims to ease growing traffic congestion and accommodate the city’s rapidly increasing population.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Prithviraj Harichandan said the shift comes in response to urban crowding and vehicle growth in the capital. After detailed discussions, the state concluded that an underground metro would offer a more efficient, long-term mobility solution.
Originally launched under the previous government, the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project had its foundation stone laid by former CM Naveen Patnaik on January 1, 2024, near Trisulia. The project has been allotted 6,255 crore.
In the first phase, the metro will run 26 km from Bhubaneswar Airport to Trisulia Square, with 22 stations at key points like Rajmahal, Jaydev Vihar, Capital Hospital, and Patia. Later phases will extend service to Cuttack’s Khannagar and SCB Medical, with plans to reach Puri.
The government targets completing Phase I by 2027, positioning the metro as a game-changer in Bhubaneswar’s public transport infrastructure.
