Odisha Set to Launch Zero Accident Mission for Safer Roads

Bhubaneswar: In a major step toward reducing road mishaps, a high-level meeting was held in Bhubaneswar on Saturday to accelerate Odisha’s road safety initiatives. The meeting was led by Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary, Commerce and Transport Department, along with Transport Commissioner Amitabh Thakur and IIT Madras road safety expert Prof. Venkatesh Balasubramanian.

A key focus of the session was the upcoming Zero Accident Development (ZAD) program—a state-level initiative aimed at significantly reducing road accidents. The program is expected to launch soon, marking a turning point in Odisha’s approach to traffic safety.

The meeting also finalized plans for Chintan Shibira, a state-supported brainstorming event that will bring together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to discuss road safety strategy and implementation.

Prof. Balasubramanian recommended a series of training programs for master trainers, police officials, healthcare workers, and teachers to improve accident prevention and emergency response.

The need for effective Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaigns was emphasized, along with the development of a real-time dashboard for monitoring road safety data.

The session concluded with a strong commitment from all stakeholders to work together toward building a safer, accident-free Odisha.
