Odisha to Boost Heritage Preservation, Plans Beautification of Monuments

Bhubaneswar : The Odisha government has decided to step up efforts to preserve and promote its cultural heritage by focusing on the conservation and beautification of ancient monuments. At a high-level meeting held at Lok Seva Bhavan, Deputy Chief Minister Parvati Parida, Law and Public Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, and Odia Language, Literature and Culture Minister Suryabansi Suraj discussed a roadmap for showcasing Odisha’s rich history to the world.

Officials revealed that Odisha has more than 3,000 heritage sites, but only 82 are managed by the Archaeological Survey of India and 212 by the State Archaeological Survey. The rest remain neglected. A special task force will be created to coordinate work between the Tourism, Culture, and Heritage departments.

Law Minister Harichandan stressed improved road connectivity, geo-tagging of temples, and a proposed corridor linking all Shakti Peethas. Culture Minister Suraj highlighted concerns over smuggling of monuments abroad and suggested focusing on 75 key sites in the first phase.

The government aims to combine heritage conservation with tourism promotion, projecting Odisha as a global cultural destination while creating livelihood opportunities for locals.
