Odisha Launches OMBRIC to Boost Marine Biotechnology and Blue Economy
Initiative aims to turn coastal biodiversity into innovation, jobs, and sustainable growth

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday launched the Odisha Marine Biotechnology Research & Innovation Corridor (OMBRIC), a state-led initiative to harness the potential of the state’s 574 km coastline for scientific, economic, and environmental gains. Developed by the Department of Science & Technology, OMBRIC seeks to drive research, entrepreneurship, and sustainable coastal development.
An MoU was signed with the National Institute of Ocean Technology and six premier institutions — including IIT Bhubaneswar, NIT Rourkela, and IISER Berhampur — to focus on marine bioresource mapping, gene discovery, bioactive compound extraction, and commercial applications.
CM Majhi said OMBRIC will bridge “lab to land” by translating marine biotech research into market-ready products, creating jobs and fostering innovation. The project will also engage coastal communities, promote conservation, and position Odisha as a leader in the blue economy.
