OCPL Bags Major Coal Block in Sundargarh
Tangardihi North reserves to strengthen Odisha’s power security and economy

Bhubaneswar : State-owned Odisha Coal and Power Limited (OCPL) has secured the Tangardihi North coal block in Sundargarh district during the 12th tranche of auctions conducted by the Ministry of Coal. This marks the first time a state-owned coal mining company has bagged a commercial block through competitive bidding in India.
The Tangardihi mine, a partially explored block, holds an estimated 1,100 million tonnes of G-13 grade reserves, with about 400 million tonnes of high-quality coal within a depth of 410 metres. OCPL plans to produce 16 million tonnes annually from the block, scaling up to 50 million tonnes per year by 2030, with a projected turnover of around ₹10,000 crore. The project is also expected to generate 2,500 direct and 3,000 indirect jobs.
OCPL already operates the Manoharpur and Dip Side blocks in Jharsuguda district, supplying coal to OPGC’s Ib thermal power stations. With Tangardihi, the company strengthens its role in Odisha’s energy security.
Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister KV Singh Deo hailed the win as a proud moment, saying the block would boost state power independence, create jobs, and support sustainable industrial growth.
