CM Majhi Unveils Ambitious Rural Infrastructure Plan

Bhubaneswar : Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has set an ambitious target for the Rural Development Department to construct 30,000 km of roads and 500 bridges over the next five years. Chairing a review meeting at Lok Seva Bhawan, Majhi directed officials to utilise 100 percent of available funds and maintain strict quality standards. He warned that action would be taken against contractors and officers failing to meet expectations, while urging durable road construction in hilly regions and training for contractors.

Odisha has achieved the fourth rank nationally under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), completing 70,711 km of roads out of 73,984 km approved. The scheme’s fourth phase focuses on tribal, aspirational, and Naxal-affected areas, with proposals for 942 new roads and 8 bridges to connect 1,021 unlinked settlements.

In 2024-25, 4,500 km of roads and 186 bridges were built. For 2025-26, targets include 5,000 km of roads, 300 bridges, and 1,229 rural infrastructure projects such as hostels, government buildings, and flood shelters.

These initiatives fall under the ₹5,000 crore “Viksit Gaon, Viksit Odisha” scheme, which aims to boost connectivity, infrastructure, and socio-economic development across rural Odisha.
