IMD Chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra Wins Prestigious UN Sasakawa Award
Honoured for pioneering work in tropical cyclone forecasting and disaster risk reduction

Bhubaneswar : Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director-General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), has been awarded the prestigious United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction. The award was presented at a special ceremony during the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, recognising his groundbreaking contributions to tropical cyclone forecasting and warning systems.
Widely known as the “Cyclone Man of India,” Dr. Mohapatra’s efforts have been instrumental in improving early warning systems, enhancing preparedness, and saving countless lives during natural disasters, particularly in the Indian Ocean region.
Congratulating him, World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General Celeste Saulo said, “He is a tireless advocate for #EarlyWarningsForAll. Under his leadership, IMD has become a vital regional hub for tropical cyclone forecasting. This recognition is a perfect birthday gift as IMD marks its 150th year and WMO celebrates its 75th.”
