Hirakud Dam to Release First Floodwater on July 6
Traditional Puja to Precede Annual Monsoon Discharge

Bhubaneswar : The Water Resources Department of Odisha has announced that the first release of floodwater from the Hirakud dam for the 2025 monsoon season will take place on July 6 (Sunday).
Although the exact number of sluice gates to be opened has not been disclosed, officials confirmed that the ritualistic puja will be performed before the water discharge, continuing the longstanding tradition at the dam.
Situated on the Mahanadi River, the Hirakud dam is among India’s oldest and largest multipurpose river valley projects. Known as the world’s longest earthen dam, it plays a vital role in flood control, irrigation, and hydroelectric power generation in the region.
