Bhubaneswar : A tragic incident occurred on National Highway 49 near the Gobindpur toll gate in Jharsuguda district on Thursday, when a toll gate employee was run over by a speeding four-wheeler.
The deceased was identified as Anil Kumar Patel, a resident of Kadambini village. Reports said Patel was on duty when a Scorpio carrying cattle hit him in the early hours of the morning. The accident triggered tension in the area, with locals demanding strict action against the culprits.
On being informed, Rengali police rushed to the spot, recovered Patel’s body, and sent it for post-mortem. The police also seized the vehicle involved in the incident and rescued six cattle that were being illegally transported.
However, the driver and other accused persons managed to flee the scene. Police have launched a manhunt to trace and nab those involved in the smuggling attempt.
Authorities assured that strict action will be taken against the offenders, even as the incident sparked outrage among locals who demanded better safety and vigilance at toll gates along the busy highway.
