Pradhan seeks GI tag for Odisha’s traditional sweet ‘Sarsatia’
Move aims to preserve Sambalpur’s unique culinary heritage

Bhubaneswar : Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan urged for a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for ‘Sarsatia,’ a traditional sweet delicacy native to western Odisha, especially Sambalpur. He said the sweet is deeply rooted in the region’s culinary culture and assured that necessary steps will be taken to secure its recognition.
Pradhan revealed that even a Karnataka-based journalist had recently requested him to initiate the GI process for Sarsatia.
The delicacy is known for its triangular, crispy mesh made of fine strands that instantly melt in the mouth, offering a smoky aftertaste with mild sweetness. Traditionally, it is prepared using crushed rice, sugar, and resin from the Ganjer tree, which lends Sarsatia its distinctive flavor and texture.
A GI tag, the minister added, will not only help preserve the heritage of Sarsatia but also boost its commercial value, benefitting local sweet makers.
