Overloaded Lift Collapses at Malkangiri Hospital, All Rescued Safely

Bhubaneswar : A major mishap was averted at the Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital  after an overloaded lift collapsed mid-way, trapping several people inside. Thankfully, all individuals were rescued safely without any casualties.

According to reports, the elevator had a carrying capacity of 10–12 persons but was loaded with as many as 27 people. Unable to withstand the excess weight, the lift wire snapped while moving from the first floor to the second.

The emergency siren went off immediately, alerting hospital staff and security personnel. The lift door was opened manually, and all trapped individuals were safely evacuated. Eyewitnesses said that timely response from the hospital staff prevented a potential tragedy.

This is not the first instance of lift malfunction at the hospital. Sources revealed that several such incidents have occurred earlier, leaving patients and attendants stranded. The recurring failures have triggered concern over safety standards and maintenance practices in government hospitals.

Addressing media persons, Additional District Medical Officer (ADMO) Dr. Brajakishore Das confirmed that the faulty lift has been taken out of service. “A team of mechanics from Visakhapatnam will arrive on Friday to repair and restore the elevator,” he said.

Following the incident, locals expressed anger and urged authorities to enforce stricter monitoring of lifts and other facilities in hospitals to prevent similar episodes in the future.
