Odisha Boosts Urban Transport with E-Buses
Charging hubs, smart ticketing, and city expansions on the way

Bhubaneswar : Odisha has secured the fifth position among Indian states in electric mobility and is set to expand its e-bus network to promote sustainable urban transport. Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra announced that over 500 new e-buses will soon be added to the existing fleet of 450, taking the total to nearly 1,000.
According to Government of India data, 14,329 e-buses are operating nationwide, with Delhi (3,564) leading, followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh. Odisha, ahead of states like West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, has emerged as a frontrunner in eastern India.
The state is also strengthening infrastructure with charging stations at depots, QR-based ticketing, NCMC cards, and app-based booking. Plans are underway to extend services beyond Bhubaneswar and Cuttack to cities like Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Berhampur, and Angul, ensuring cleaner, smarter, and more reliable public transport.
