NIT Rourkela and IIT Dhanbad Launch Joint Centre to Modernise Mining Sector
New Centre of Excellence to Promote Safer, Smarter, and Sustainable Mining Through Technology

Bhubaneswar : The National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT-R) and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad have come together to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) aimed at transforming India’s mining sector through digital innovation, automation, and cyber physical systems (CPS).
The CoE will be jointly managed by NIT-R’s Foundation for Technology and Business Incubation (FTBI) and TEXMiN, a non-profit PSU tech body under the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) at IIT Dhanbad. It was inaugurated on June 20 by NIT-R Director Prof. K Umamaheshwar Rao and IIT-ISM Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra.
The Centre aims to address long-standing issues in mining such as poor safety, low productivity, and outdated manual practices. It will support deep-tech research, award projects and fellowships, and offer advanced infrastructure and mentoring.
Over the next four years, the CoE will empower researchers and start-ups with the tools to build scalable, sustainable mining technologies. This collaborative initiative is expected to enhance real-time monitoring, data integration, and efficiency in mining operations—paving the way for a smarter and more sustainable future for India’s mining industry.
