Minor Girl Dies in House Collapse Amid Heavy Rains in Keonjhar
Mother and sibling critically injured as mud wall caves in at Kolhabeda village

Bhubaneswar : A tragic incident struck Kolhabeda village in Ghasipura block of Keonjhar district when a mud house collapsed under the impact of incessant rains. The mishap claimed the life of a minor girl while her mother and younger sibling sustained critical injuries.
The deceased child has been identified as the daughter of Anjana Jena. According to reports, Anjana and her two children were asleep when one of the house’s mud walls, weakened by continuous downpour, caved in. The girl died instantly, while Anjana and her surviving child managed to escape but suffered serious injuries.
Both were rushed to Anandapur hospital where doctors confirmed their condition is now stable.
The tragedy has cast a pall of gloom over the village, with locals expressing grief and frustration. Many have raised concerns about the safety of families still living in vulnerable mud houses, despite multiple government housing schemes meant to provide pucca homes to economically weaker sections.
Residents have urged authorities to speed up the implementation of housing and disaster-resilient infrastructure, especially in rain-prone, low-lying areas like Kolhabeda.
The incident has reignited debate over why vulnerable families remain dependent on fragile dwellings. Locals and activists argue that proper monitoring and timely assistance could prevent such avoidable tragedies.
As rains continue across parts of Odisha, the disaster in Keonjhar stands as a grim reminder of the urgent need for safer housing, disaster preparedness, and stronger rural infrastructure.
