Jalaka River Crosses Danger Mark in Balasore
District on high alert as continuous rainfall triggers flood threat

Bhubaneswar : The Balasore district administration has been placed on high alert after the Jalaka river crossed its danger level, posing a serious flood threat to low-lying areas in Basta block. Persistent rainfall in recent days has sharply increased water levels.
According to Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department, Chandrashekhar Padhee, the Jalaka river at Mathani was flowing at 6.71 metres, surpassing the danger mark of 6.50 metres. Authorities warned that further rise in water level could inundate nearby villages.
Padhee further informed that the Baitarani river in Bhadrak remained below the danger mark. At Akhuapada, the river was flowing at 18.24 metres and was expected to recede further, likely dropping below the warning level by Saturday.
Fifteen blocks of Odisha have recorded heavy rainfall, with Padmapur receiving the highest at 88 mm. Officials are monitoring the situation across the state as more rain is forecast.
Meanwhile, Hirakud Dam has reported an increased inflow of 3.36 lakh cusecs, with water being released through 20 gates. The current water level at the reservoir stands at 626.58 feet. Padhee cautioned that inflow could rise to 4.5–5 lakh cusecs by September 7.
The Water Resources Department has assured that the situation is under close watch. Timely measures will be taken to minimise risks to people and property in vulnerable areas.
