Fly Ash Transport from NTPC Talcher Raises Environmental and Health Concerns in Odisha

Talcher, Odisha, May 17, 2025:

Even as NTPC Talcher Kaniha achieves a milestone of 100% fly ash utilization, environmental and health issues continue to plague the region. Residents of Talcher allege that poor transportation practices and inadequate infrastructure have led to serious pollution, affecting their daily lives. This has raised concerns about respiratory issues among the local population, particularly children and the elderly.

According to reports, the power plant’s achievement aligns with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’s mandate. However, the actual transportation of fly ash remains problematic. Locals claim that ash is being moved in open trucks without proper covering, allowing fine particles to disperse into the air. These particles are causing respiratory issues, skin problems, and contamination of water bodies in surrounding.

Local communities have expressed their frustration over the recurring problems associated with fly ash transportation. Protests and demands for better safety measures have been reported, with residents calling for immediate action to mitigate the environmental and health impacts.

The incident has reignited debate over NTPC’s fly ash management. Environmental activists and affected villagers are urging the government and the company to implement stricter safety measures. Recommendations include using sealed containers for ash transport, regular pipeline maintenance, and real-time monitoring systems to prevent future disasters.

As the region continues to meet growing energy demands, the Talcher situation highlights the need for a balanced approach—one that ensures industrial progress while protecting public health and the environment.
