Hirakud Dam Authorities Close Four Gates as Inflow Declines

Bhubaneswar : The Hirakud Dam authorities on Saturday morning closed four gates following a decline in water inflow from the upper catchment areas. With this adjustment, the dam is currently releasing water through 20 gates — 13 on the left side and 7 on the right side.

Officials said the decision was taken after monitoring the inflow pattern. A day earlier, heavy rains in the upper catchment had prompted the dam management to open eight more gates in two phases, raising the total to 24.

At 6 am on Saturday, the water level in the reservoir was recorded at 626.52 feet, which slightly rose to 626.58 feet by 6 pm. However, the situation has stabilised as rainfall has reduced in both upper and lower catchment areas.

Between Thursday morning and Friday morning, the upper catchment received 11.18 mm of rainfall, while the lower catchment registered 6.80 mm. With inflow subsiding, authorities are closely monitoring the reservoir level and will regulate gate operations as needed to balance flood control and irrigation requirements.
