Odisha Explores Use of Plastic Waste in Urban Road Construction

Bhubaneswar : The Odisha government is considering the use of shredded plastic waste in urban road construction to reduce pollution and promote sustainability. A meeting chaired by Principal Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Usha Padhee, was held to discuss this initiative.

Padhee emphasized the need for environment-friendly and sustainable practices in urban infrastructure. She highlighted that shredded plastic, especially from bottles and carry bags, can be mixed with hot bitumen for road construction—a method successfully adopted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Officials discussed launching pilot projects in select urban areas to assess feasibility. This approach not only improves road durability but also offers an effective solution for plastic waste management.

The meeting, held at Kharavela Bhawan, was attended by BDA Vice-Chairperson Dr. N. Thirumala Naik, NHAI Director J.P. Verma, and senior officers from BMC and PH. The initiative aims to support a circular economy and reduce environmental pollution.
